Cameron Bear’s first exposure to anthropomorphic animals arrived in the form of Saturday morning cartoons. When The New Adventures of Flash Gordon debuted in 1979, he would sit in front of the television with rapt attention watching the colorful adventures of Prince Thun the Lion Man. Planet Mongo teemed with animal-human hybrids and so did Cam’s imagination.
His family moved from Massachusetts to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in the early eighties while his father worked for an oil company. During that time his friends introduced him to all kinds of fantasy and sci-fi media that would later influence his writing. It started with Frank Herbert’s Dune, a tale about a boy transported from his waterlogged home to the deserts of Arrakis. Ray Bradbury (S is for Space, R is for Rocket), Robert Silverberg (Lord Valentine’s Castle), Piers Anthony (On a Pale Horse, Bearing an Hourglass), Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (The Dragonlance Chronicles) followed after that.
Decades later, Cam now lives in the lush forests of Washington State, where more water falls in a week than Dhahran sees in a year. Equipped with a B.A. in English and love of furry characters, he writes his own fantastic tales in the sci-fi, fantasy, and horror genres. He’s the author of the book Beasts & Brutality (coming soon from Fenris Publishing) and the short story “Hive Mindset” (Plott Hound, issue six).
