Member-Exclusive Audio Fiction Narrator List

TL;DR: FWG now lists audiobook narrators members can commission.

Furry writers! The Furry Writers’ Guild is proud to announce a new benefit for Guild members: the FWG Audio Fiction Narrator List.

Voice talent from the furry fandom and animation industry has come together to make it easier for furry authors to turn their books into audiobooks. Short stories can be turned into audio shorts.

FWG consulted with the Union of British Columbia Performers to set this up, a union that represents the cast of numerous English-language anime and cartoons, including My Little Pony. Talented voice actors from our own voice fandom and other unions have also signed on for this project.

THE NARRATOR LIST

How it works:

Voice actors can get on the list by filling out the registration form. FWG members (and voice actors on the list) can request voice actor contact information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did FWG partner with UBCP on this?

Furries like anime and cartoons. When some of the UBCP members expressed some interest in reading furry audiobooks, we jumped at the opportunity. When the ponies call, we answer.

What about audio projects shorter than an hour?

Short projects have some wiggle room. The author pays for whatever fraction of an hour the finished audio is, unless the voice actor or their union has a one-hour minimum (UBCP does). Pick-ups may cost less as well, but check with your voice actor, as a union may require the full pick-up fee (again, UBCP does). Alternatively, you can commission multiple stories as a batch. The stories don’t need to be from the same author (e.g. if you run a paid fiction podcast).

How are disputes handled?

If an author or voice actor has a problem they can’t resolve (such as the other party taking too long), they should contact FWG and we’ll investigate.

For authors:

We’ve streamlined the process of making an audiobook. If you can hire an artist for a book cover, then you can now handle hiring a voice actor for an audiobook. You review the list, then offer to commission a voice actor.

What’s the author responsible for?

– Providing a final copy of the manuscript to be read.

– Providing a description of your main characters (i.e. species, age, gender, accent). You can also show them art!

– Explaining any weird stuff you’ve invented and how to pronounce it.

– Reviewing the audio and informing the narrator of any fixes needed.

– Paying for the time required to re-record and re-edit lines you request.

– Any audio treatments beyond reading, such as post-processing, adding music or background sound effects, or changing how long the chapter pauses are.

How can I, an author in FWG, commission an audiobook narrator?

1) Check out the voice actor profiles and prices.

2) Contact a voice actor with your offer and a summary of your project.

3) If they agree, fill out the FWG audiobook contract template.

4) Email it to them, so they can sign it and send it back.

5) Send the manuscript (include the intro and outro credits!), as well as any art, and let them record it.

6) Give them your money. You’re done!

How does the process compare to an art commission?

Like a book cover commission, you will be picking someone, explaining what you need, and then reviewing the final product. Compared to an art commission, however, an audiobook takes super long. Thus, it costs more. During review, you should assume that any significant changes to what they turn in will cost you a fee per batch of changes—or even their standard hourly rate if you want them to do extensive re-recordings.

Do serious voice actors really want to see my illustrations, ref sheets, and sketches?

Yes. They are actors, so the more they get a sense of the characters the better they can voice them. Remember that any art of your characters can inspire them, not just the art you have for that particular book.

Why can’t non-members get narrators’ contact info? That’s not fair!

Furry Writers’ Guild is a professional organization (hence “guild”). For this project, we are asking voice actors to trust FWG with their contact info in return for finding them authors. We vet our members when they join and hold them to a code of professional ethics, so voice actors know they’re not dealing with a scammer. FWG also can’t very well help settle any dispute with the voice actor if you’re not in the organization.

Can’t I just have a computer read my book and sell that?

Text-to-speech is a great tool for accessibility—or listening to this article while you cook dinner. Ideal for personal use. However, selling software-read novels is 1) scammy, because any phone or computer can do text-to-speech, and 2) lower quality, because computers are stupid and have no idea what’s going on in your book, unlike a voice actor. Selling computer-generated content, including text, images, and audio, is against FWG rules.

Why are these prices so high?

Think how long it would take you to read your book aloud. Then think about how long it would take you to go into Audacity and edit out all your mistakes. Now, imagine you were hired to do that at a professional level of quality for a book you’d never seen before. Voice acting is work. And we haven’t even gotten to the cost of a good microphone, home studio audio dampening, bribing their pets to stay quiet, et cetera.

Why does FWG set a minimum pay rate per hour?

To avoid creating a perverse incentive for a race-to-the-bottom in voice actor rates. Art is work, even if you like doing it.

As a FWG member, can a voice-acting friend give me a discount below the minimum pay rate? Could I collaborate with them with no money exchanged?

Yes, to both questions. You are only limited to the minimum pay rate when working with someone through this agreement.

Can I hire multiple voice actors for a full-cast audiobook?

Ambitious! Yes, you can do that. Just tell everybody what you’re doing from the start.

Can I spam a bunch of voice actors with the same offer, then only accept the first one to respond?

What? No. Please ask them one at a time. If they haven’t gotten back to you in a couple weeks, tell them you’re going to ask someone else.

Do I have to pay ongoing royalties forever?

No, you only pay for the work per hour.

Do we have to use the contract?

FWG recommends you use the contract template, especially in cases when hiring a pro, not just a friend of yours.

Can authors ask for a demo?

Yes, you can ask for a free sample, but it shouldn’t be more than a few paragraphs. Most voice actors will happily do a demo for a project they’re interested in, but it’s not mandatory.

What is “finished audio”?

The narrator records themself reading your book aloud, then fixes any mistakes they make. If you find errors after that, tell them, so it can get fixed.

What are “pick-ups”?

Pick-ups are a batch of fixes to the delivered “finished” audio. A narrator gets paid to fix typos or other errors. A batch of fixes (i.e. pick-ups) costs a flat amount per project (one-quarter of the narrator’s rate for one finished hour). Asking a narrator to re-record whole pages of text is not a pick-up. That’s re-recording and costs the full hourly rate. A book series would have one batch of corrections per book.

How soon should I get back to the narrator after they send me the finished audio?

No hard deadline, but the sooner you get back to them, the easier the fixes will be. If you wait until they’ve done a few other projects, they won’t remember all the details of yours…or how they voiced your main villain.

What format will the audio be in?

By default, you’ll get a high-bitrate MP3, WAV, MOV, or similar. If an author would like their content in a particular format, they should specify this before payment. This includes: bit-rate, multiple-microphone setups (for stereo or surround sound), file format, and recording via particular hardware or software.

Will voice actors be too shy to record my sex scenes? They’re steamy.

Some of them might not be comfortable with particular content, or might want to read it under a particular name. Just like commissioning an artist, you’ll have to ask. Be up-front with them. Write the offer like you’re selling your book to your closest furry friends. Also, voice actors are people and we have it on good authority that people often like sex.

Why would I hire a furry to read my furry book?

Because they will know what the heck you’re writing about.

Why would I hire a professional cartoon voice actor to read my furry book?

Don’t pretend you go to this page without watching a ton of cartoons.

Can I hire voice actors for animations, visual novels, video essays, documentaries, or video games?

Maybe. That depends on the voice actor. Voice actors in unions have different regulations (and possibly different rates) for anything with an ongoing visual component. The focus of this project is on audiobooks.

Can I hire them to record audio clips to play via my fursuit, which is based on a character they voice in canon?

Yes. You just can’t sell anything with that audio.

Can I hire a voice actor for my fiction, non-fiction, or poetry podcast?

Yes. That sort of podcast is just a series of little audiobooks.

Can I hire a voice actor for an interactive fiction audiobook?

Yes. We wish you victory in staying organized. And remember: narrators will only accept a manuscript, not a Twine document or something, so export it and clean it up. Make sure you register it with Gamebooks.org and tell them Tempo sent you.

Why didn’t my narrator fix the typo I missed?

Because there’s no natural stopping point if they start changing your book. Just pay them to fix it during pick-ups.

What about the parts of my book that are in another language?

Tell the narrator how to pronounce those parts, syllable-by-syllable—especially if you made the language or word up.

What if my whole book is in a non-English language?

This project really focuses on English. Also, some unions are limited in what languages they record in. UBCP, for example, can’t record works that are predominantly in French, since that is the purview of a different union.

Can I ask the voice actor to do different accents for different characters?

You can. They may tell you no. They may also tell you yes, but at a higher rate. Remember that every voice actor has certain accents they are comfortable with and others they are not familiar with.

Can I hire a voice actor to read my fanfiction?

Yes. You just can’t sell the finished product.

Can I hire a voice actor to read my NSFW fanfiction?

Yes. But again, you can’t sell it.

Can I hire a voice actor to read my NSFW fanfiction if they voice one of the characters in the canon version?

Yes. However, in addition to the above, you need to indicate in the audio file that you are not endorsed by the intellectual property holder. The voice actor may also want to use a different name, to avoid awkward conversations at work. Unions are typically fine with members working under multiple names and with doing parody or fan projects, though they still have to report all paid work to the union. Just be up-front with the narrator when you pitch your project—and remember that they can always decline.

Can I hire a voice actor to read a NSFW fanfic I wrote of another furry author’s work as a surprise gift for them? Even if that same voice actor narrated their audiobook?

Yes. You just can’t sell it. This fandom…

Can I have my book turned into an audiobook before the text version is published, so they come out at the same time?

Technically yes, but publishers almost always request some changes to books before publication. You may end up paying for re-recordings. When you see a major publisher do a simultaneous multi-format launch like that, that means the book was finished months or years prior and sat around until the audiobook was done.

Isn’t my book too weird for a famous voice actor?

Do not underestimate the weird stuff an actor has encountered. Weird stuff happens in cartoons and anime.

Where in the fandom can I publish audiobooks?

Bad Dog Books, a division of FurPlanet, sells furry audiobooks. They also sell ebooks. https://baddogbooks.com/product-cat/audiobooks/

Where can I submit audio short stories?

Fiction podcasts are a good option. Some are paid, others aren’t. The Voice of Dog is a nice example of a furry audio short story podcast. https://thevoice.dog/

I’m too embarrassed to listen to my own audiobook! What do I do?

Bribe a friend to listen to it and take notes for you. Order them a pizza.

Can audiobooks have music in them?

Yes. An audiobook is any recording that’s more book than music.

Can I hire a voice actor to sing or play music for my audiobook?

If they’re a singer or other musician, sure!

For publishers and podcasters:

Remember that furry publishers and podcasters can be associate members of FWG, so you also get access. You can work with your authors to help get the audiobook made. If you pay for the book and coordinate with the narrator, you are responsible for the author’s part of the process (i.e. supplying the manuscript and checking for errors). Remember to include your company in the credits.

For narrators:

We’ve set up a system where you put your info in once and all 300+ members of FWG can view it any time. Any voice actor in the fandom or who is an established professional is welcome. Once you sign up, all you have to do is keep an eye on the service you listed in your contact info, since the offer will come to you. Fill out this form to apply to be added to the narrator list.

What’s the narrator responsible for?

– Recording all text, as provided, clearly.

– Re-recording lines with mistakes, including mispronunciations.

– Asking the commissioner about the pronunciations of obscure or invented words.

– Editing out their errors, duplicated lines, noticeable pauses, and noticeable mouth sounds. (Typos are the author’s fault.)

– Having their own recording and editing hardware and software (e.g. microphone, sound insulation, an app like Audacity).

Can I be on the list if I’m not in a union or FWG?

Yes! A narrator just needs to be someone FWG can verify as being established in either the fandom or the voice acting world.

I’m in UBCP, SAG, or another union that includes voice actors. Can I be on the list?

Absolutely. FWG supports unions and will work with your union, if needed.

I’m a furry who wants to voice-act, but I’ve never been in anything. Can I sign up?

Here’s the deal: Our minimum allowed rate is US$100/hour. Nobody is going to pay you that when you’ve got no samples to show them. We recommend you start with some free projects, such as game mods or readings of fan comics on YouTube.

Can I, a random person who is neither a furry nor a voice actor, be on the list?

No, sorry. FWG either needs to establish that you’re in the fandom or that you’re an established voice actor. Otherwise, someone could set up a bot to spam a thousand accounts and screw up the whole process.

My author is giving me too many fixes—what do I do?

Talk with them. Read over the “For Authors” and “For Narrators” sections of this page together on a call. If you are unable to reach an agreement, you are welcome to reach out to FWG for assistance.

Does a narrator have to use the name they do in their union?

No. They still need to report their work to their union, but the finished product can be under any name they want.

What if I want to update my info in the list?

You just fill out the form again.

Can I be removed from the list?

Yes, just contact the FWG email [furwritersguild@gmail.com] or someone in a leadership position.

Can I ask to read the whole book before I commit to narrating it?

Absolutely. Authors will, frankly, love that you’re taking such an interest.

As a voice actor, how much information should I provide in the registration form?

The more information you provide, the easier it will be for someone to match you with a project you’ll be good at. Focus on things about yourself you want to see in your work, such as interests or backgrounds.

As a voice actor, can I reach out to an author I want to work with?

Please do! Most authors would be exceptionally flattered by that.

Can my agent or union contact someone on the list?

Sure. Have them reach out to FWG.

NARRATOR LIST

Please read the above sections before requesting contact information from a narrator. Please only request contact information from one narrator at a time and wait until you hear back before requesting another’s contact. You must be a Furry Writers’ Guild member or a narrator on this list in order to receive contact information.

“I’m a MAWG (middle-aged white guy) from Toronto, Canada with a pretty nice voice. I’m good at talking and bad at talking about myself. In another life I was a travel agent, and mostly leveraged my voice for customer service for a couple of decades. These days I’m trying to get the voiceover thing off the ground, and occasionally playing video games and curling.”
Accents: Non-regional Canadian English. I can read French, but I’m not fluent enough to extemporize. I can do a decent French accent and an okay Southern US accent.
Interests: Don’t get me started about food or drink. I will go on and on. And on. My most recent hyperfixation was Beastars, and again, I will not shut up. Been going through a bit of a Godzilla phase right now as well.
Minimum rates: USD 150pfh is my base rate for narration, but this is negotiable based on the project. This includes three rounds of corrections. Can accept CAD. I am open to negotiation on these projects depending on the scope of the project, the role, and the funding. Usually I use the VAC Indie rate guide as a roadmap.
Availability: My availability is entirely dependent on how many projects I have on the go. I am currently in the middle of a large project, but typically I try to work almost full-time hours for long-form narration projects.
Are dragonfoxes a thing? ‘Cause I’d sure want to be a dragonfox. If not, maybe some kind of weaselly-thing?

My film expertise has led me to being hired to contribute commentary tracks to DVD and Blu-Ray releases. I studied Speech & Theatre at the University of Tennessee, took classes in dialectology, and produced/directed/acted in my own underground theatre productions.”
Accents: Standard American with a twinge of Southern Appalachian that can be turned off completely or dialed up to one hundred. Can also do Georgia (think Southern Belle), New York City, French, Irish, some British. The latter are suggestive rather than parody, and are best used for contrasting characters rather than main characters (which, of course, would be best performed by a native speaker).

“I’ve been a performing musician in the Furry fandom since 2007, now touring as Progressive House DJ “Avian Invasion.” I currently live in a padded cell– I mean, recording studio –in Seattle, WA where I co-own a local Furry nightlife organizer called FetchNW. My hobbies include arguing with kick/bass interaction, arguing with VRChat full-body trackers, and arguing with spiders that somehow find their way into a studio that I thought was airtight. Occasionally, I perform and release music.”
Accents: My natural accent is nondescript North American English, I can adopt an English accent without insulting anyone, and I’ve been paid to voice a Scottish character and haven’t received hate mail for it yet. I also create character voices for audiobook productions, ranging from hissing reptilian species to stoic fantasy behemoths. One of my specialties is the 1950’s radio announcer style (think “duck and cover”).
Interests: These days I could walk you through studio construction, from the foundation up, and sing the sad, sad song of drywalling. I can nerd out about music production until the heat death of the universe. If I find out you’re into motorcycles, you won’t be able to shut me up. If you’re truly looking to be put to sleep, ask me about setting up a live streaming rig on a budget– from automating OBS to using MIDI data to control everything from camera movements to lighting cues.
Minimum rates: $200 PFH USD with a 1 hour minimum, but can be negotiated for shorter reads (< 1 page) if I have a batch of work to do with it.
Availability: Available full-time, booking more than a month in advance is preferable as I also tour as a musician.
Other: Intro/Outro music can also be provided for a separate rate, with IP ownership negotiable as part of the commission. My latest example is at https://blooddollpod.com with intros and outros and a full commissioned song in episode 2.

“I’m a trained British actor in my 50’s, who made the switch to audiobooks about 7 years ago, and it’s the best kind of acting work I’ve ever had – in fact, it’s the only thing I do now. I narrate everything from sweet Regency Romance to…. well, go look up ‘Henry the Hucow’ on Audible. There’s really nothing you can throw my way that will weird me out. My only no-no’s are non-consensual sexual scenes, and nothing in any way sexual with minors.”
Accents: RP (BBC English), London, Home counties, Multi Lingual English, Scottish, Yorkshire, General SW England, Manchester, Northern Ireland, General Welsh, General American, Australian, General Russian/Eastern European. Most other accents can be provided for characters with minimal dialogue.
Interests: Tough one for me to answer. I read the book to prepare it, and myself, for recording. I then ask any questions I need to of the author, and look up and learn a little about whatever comes up in the book. If I were to nerd out on anything, it would actually be about how narrating works!
Minimum rates: 350 USD/EUR Per Finished Hour of audio, which includes third party editing, proofing and mastering.
Availability: I’m a full time narrator, so timelines can vary. I usually book 3 months out, but do get the odd cancellation, so it’s always worth approaching me.
Other: I live in rural France with my wife and our dogs. We all love each other very much.

“I am a bisexual American currently living in Alabama. Veteran of the US Army which allowed me to pay for college and multiple technical certifications. Worked at a radio station while in High School which is how I first found my love of being behind a microphone. Owner/Operator of the Dinner at Yiffany’s podcast, as well as long time contributor to The Voice of Dog podcast.”
Accents: Natural speaking voice – US Southern, can adjust density depending on need. I can perform several various accents but I’m unfamiliar with the proper names for them.
Interests: Computers, Networking, and tech in general. It’s been a lifelong hobby/passion of mine. Animal husbandry/hobby farm – because I work in IT, my secondary hobby is having a hobby farm and I enjoy having something non-tech to escape to. Had I not gone into IT, I would have gone on to be a Veterinarian.
Minimum rates: 100/hour USD, $2/clip with $50 minimum
Other: My primary focus area is NSFW content but I’m not adverse to SFW. I’ve been told I have a penchant for eliciting certain…feelings in those who hear my work. I mainly do VO/VA for the fun of it. Helping to make a reader/listener feel the emotions of a work is the greatest joy I can have.

Currently, I am the voice-claim of Kiba’s (chaosdraws) character Duke

Bluesky, fox
Audio Sample 1 My name is Christian Jasper, I have been in other episodes for this podcast as well.
Audio Sample 2 (SFW) I performed all voices, most recent work/project I have done.
Audio Sample 3 (SFW)
Audio Sample 4 (NSFW) Duke, the wolf, is pitched down slightly. The other character is my more natural speaking voice.
Audio Sample 5 (SFW) song cover
“Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read my application! I am a Black Queer man raised and residing in Middle Tennessee. By day I am an administrative assistant for the research side of a hospital. Outside of the dayjob, I race gokarts, iRacing, do voicework (free and paid, both SFW and NSFW. It’s all insanely fun), and love anime & games. The current fixations are FFXIV and Deltarune admittedly, and just about every Friday Night I run an Anime Night for my friends, sort of in an Adult Swim style. I have a BS in Communications with a focus in Theatre Performance, and a minor in Dance, and I am also affiliated with The Neighborhood Studio based out of Atlanta.”
Accents: Natural speaking voice: American English dialect, no accent — I have been asked if I am from California more than a few times. Others: AAVE code-switching from upbringing. North Country English Theatre dialect will need a little work to bring back, but I have familiarity with it from past performances. American Southern Dialect. Willing to learn other dialects as needed, if possible.
Interests: Auto racing — especially Formula 1 and IndyCar. If I start, it might be hard to stop me. I’ve been into it ever since I was 7. That was almost 30 years ago. The love hasn’t changed.
Minimum rates: 100/hour USD, $0.30/word; $10-$15/minute of moaning; willing to negotiate within reason depending on commissioner’s budget.

“I’m a polyamorous panromantic demisexual non-binary femme (she/they) from Lubbock, TX, currently residing in Michigan. I’ve also lived in Missouri and Los Angeles, CA. I’m a country/woodsy gal at heart and though big cities have lots of exciting experiences to offer, I tend to prefer the quiet of the countryside. I love animals (I have a dog, cat, and several snakes), I’m a big fan of horror games and movies, dark fantasy, and story-driven survival games like Red Dead Redemption and The Last of Us. I love to write fiction, draw, and sing. And I’m on the autism spectrum, so when I lock in on an interest or a hobby, there’s no prying me out of it!”
Accents: I tend to code-switch depending on if there are other southerners in the room, so my accent tends to be somewhere between Non-dialectic North American English and Southern/Texan.
Interests: Animals! Namely dogs and horses, but animals in general are a huge special interest of mine, and I know tons of fun facts, am knowledgable about dozens (if not hundreds) of breeds of dog and horse, and could probably talk some ears off about their different tendencies, personalities, and the jobs they were originally bred for.
Minimum Rates: $250/hour USD, $2/clip – $100 minimum
Availability: I voice act on the side part-time – my main job is as a production manager for animation, but my schedule is flexible
